Welcome to my column, The Repro Roundup, in which I summarize abortion news happening around the country, why it matters, and what you can do about it — in 250 words or less.

What’s the issue? According to a study by the University of Kansas, the number of procedural (also called surgical) abortions has not decreased since the start of the coronavirus pandemic because of bans on the procedure. At the onset of the pandemic, thirty-three states banned elective medical procedures and thirteen states specifically included surgical abortions in that category.

Overall, the study found that during the pandemic this…

What’s the issue? This week the Supreme Court will review three separate petitions over the Trump administration's rule that any family planning clinic cannot receive any Title X funding if that clinic refers patients to abortion care. This is known as the Domestic Gag Rule. Reminder, no family planning clinic of any kind can use federal dollars, like those from Title X funding, to be used for…

What’s the issue? According to a new study released by the Center for Disease Control, pregnant women who contract COVID-19 are more likely to die than women who are not pregnant. This is a major development from their last study in which they had no hard evidence yet that coronavirus was more deadly for pregnant women. The CDC analyzed 400,000 women with the virus aged 15–44 years…

What’s the issue? The Tennessee Attorney General appealed a lower-courts decision that the state's 48-hour waiting period is unconstitutional according to NBC. The AG has asked the Court to keep the waiting period in place while the case is decided in a Federal court. The law was struck down last month and the District judge ruled the waiting period does not serve any legitimate purpose and places…

What’s the issue? Sixty-two percent of Louisianans voted to adopt an amendment to their state constitution that denies anyone in the state the right to an abortion on Election Day. However, abortion is still 100% legal in the state. The amendment is what is called a “trigger law” or a law that will go into effect only if abortion is no longer federally legal, like if Roe…

What’s the issue? A new, online digital reproductive health care provider is live providing sexual and reproductive health care via telehealth for rural Minnesotans. JustThePill.com provides abortion medication, birth control, and STI treatments through phonecalls or online appointments with doctors. Soon, they plan on providing gender-affirming hormonal therapies as well.

Why does this matter? During the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for telabortion care is clearer than ever…

What’s the issue? Two anti-abortion measures are on the ballots of Colorado and Louisiana voters today. In Colorado, Proposition 115 will make abortion past the 22 weeks illegal. The two Colorado clinics that provide care later in pregnancy (out of the five total in the country) receive patients from 40 states from an average of 950 miles away. …

In an attempt to prevent myself from getting completely and utterly overwhelmed by the sheer amount of abortion news in the world, I set up certain parameters early on for this column. I wouldn’t really cover antis and their shenanigans, which includes the current administration. I wouldn’t cover issues that made the news in a big way or dominated headlines. And I would keep it U.S.-focused because…

What’s the issue? The Kentucky Attorney General, Daniel Cameron, has asked the Supreme Court to uphold an anti-abortion law that was struck down by a Federal appeals court in 2019. House Bill 454 would ban abortions in the state after 11 weeks by outlawing a common and safe method of abortion, dilation, and evacuation. The bill passed in the state legislature and was signed into law by…

What’s the issue? The Supreme Court is deciding whether or not to hear a challenge to Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban — one of the strictest in the country — today. This ban directly conflicts with one of Roe’s pre-viability bans on abortion that prevent any state from banning abortion before a fetus is viable to survive outside the womb. If the Supreme Court decides to hear the…
