Repro Roundup: Abortion is still legal in Louisiana

Welcome to my column, The Repro Roundup, in which I summarize abortion news happening around the country, why it matters, and what you can do about it — in 250 words or less.

What’s the issue? Sixty-two percent of Louisianans voted to adopt an amendment to their state constitution that denies anyone in the state the right to an abortion on Election Day. However, abortion is still 100% legal in the state. The amendment is what is called a “trigger law” or a law that will go into effect only if abortion is no longer federally legal, like if Roe falls. There are still three abortion clinics in the state that opened their doors yesterday and will continue to do so until the last possible second. Abortion is a right and the majority of Americans want it to be legal.

Why does this matter? When headlines only give half the story, like abortion outlawed in Louisiana, people seeking abortion miss the fact that it’s still legal right now. And if Roe falls, but another federal law takes its place and makes abortion legal, like the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), abortion will once again become legal in the state. Currently, 24 states have similar laws to Louisiana that would outlaw abortion immediately after Roe falls.
